Course Objective: Objective of this course is to make students knowledgeable about the production and operation related function, role as well as inform them about production planning and control. The course also aims to familiarize students to take decision for location, layout and quality issues.
Learning Outcome: After going through this course the students will develop an understanding of issues, scopes and challenges involved in the area of production and Operation Management. They will be equipped with basic skills regarding layout and location selection, work and time study etc. They will be familiar of planning and control issues, designing decisions etc. They will be efficient in designing of a production system and type, taking care of Quality Control and Quality Management and many more.

Unit-1: Introduction to Production and Operation Management (Lectures: 15)
Concept, Role, Scope and Functions of Production and Operation Management, Relationship with other functional Areas; Nature and Types of Production; Concept and element of production system; Product & Process Design; Duties and Responsibilities of Production Manager.
Unit-2: Plant Location Planning (Lectures: 15)
Plant Location Planning, Choice and Selection of Plant Location; Factors Affecting plant location planning, Plant Layout Planning - Types of Layout, Layout Planning and Analysis; Criteria for a Good layout.
Unit-3: Production Planning and Control (Lectures: 18)
Demand Forecasting for Production, Types and Methods (Qualitative and Quantitative) of demand forecasting, Selection of forecasting methods; Production Process Analysis, Production Scheduling; Capacity Planning; Inventory Management - Concept and Application.
Unit-4: Work Measurement: (Lectures: 15)
Concept and objectives of work measurement; Objectives and Techniques of Work Sampling, Time Study, Method Study, Motion Study.
Unit-5: Quality Control, Quality Management and Quality Standards (Lectures: 17)
Meaning and significance of quality control; Quality circles, Kanban, Poka-Yoke, Kaizen, Benchmarking, Quality Function Deployment, Value Stream Mapping; Total Quality Management (TQM) : Concept, Features and Objectives of TQM; Training for TQM; Implementation of TQM. Statistical Quality Control (SQC): Concept and Objectives of SQC, Product control and process control, Six sigma, Control Charts; ISO 9000.
