Course Objective: Principles of stratigraphy imparts the basic knowledge about the concept of stratigraphy, the basic stratigraphic sub-divisions and geological time scale.

Practical: Geological Field Work (2 credits)
Unit I: Basic field measurement techniques: Use of Diagonal scale, Clinometer and Brunton compass, abney level. Study of Toposheet.
Recognition and measurement of attitudes of diastropic features, tracing lithologic contacts of igneous and metamorphic rocks and representing on toposheet.
Unit-II: Identification of rock types in field; structures and textures of rocks (Igneous, Metamorphic and Sedimentary), use of hand lens, step count, measuring tape and hammer.
Unit III: Recognition and measurement of attitudes of primary sedimentary structures, preparation of cross‐sections, description and measurement of a sedimentary section and lithologic representations
Unit-IV: Preparation of detail field report and viva-voce
